Tamaki Makaurau – New Zealand’s estimated resident population was provisionally 5,127,400 at September 30, Stats NZ said today.

National population estimates give the best available measure of the population, by age and sex, usually living in New Zealand.

There were 2,543,500 males and 2,583,800 females. Other key facts:

  • the median age of males and females was 37.1 and 39.1 years, respectively.
  • up from 34,578
  • the total fertility rate was 1.65 births per woman, down from 1.66
  • the infant mortality rate was 3.57 deaths per 1,000 live births, down from 4.5.

The number of births to unmarried parents (ex-nuptial births, 29,508) exceeded the number of births to married parents (nuptial births, 29,238) for the first time. However, nearly two in three ex-nuptial births had parents who were in a de facto relationship, living together as a couple.

The Māori population grew by 17,200, or 2.0 percent compared with 0.2 percent for the national population.

Natural increase (births minus deaths) was 13,500, with the balance reflecting net migration and net inter-ethnic mobility (those changing their ethnic identification to include Māori, minus those no longer including Māori in their ethnic identification).

New Zealand’s estimated Māori ethnic population was 892,200, or 17.4 percent of the national population.

There were 444,400 males identifying as Māori and 447,800 females identifying as Māori

the median ages for males and females identifying as Māori were 25.5 and 27.6 years respectively, compared with national median ages of 37.0 and 39.1 years respectively, reflecting a younger Māori population.
