State Highway 35 remains CLOSED between Opotiki and Cape Runaway (Whangaparoa Bay) tonight. Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency contractors are working tirelessly to clear around 25 slips affecting this stretch of road.
There will be three crews back tomorrow morning to make the most of the improving weather conditions. The aim is to get one lane open under priority give way, as soon as its possible to do so.
The detour is via State Highway 2 Waioeka Gorge.
Around the region
State Highway 5 Waiotapu (Rotorua) is reduced to one lane due to a slip.
There are no other closures on Bay of Plenty state highways currently, but road users are still advised to take care, even as the weather improves.
Watch out for contractors who continue to work clearing slips and repairing pavement defects caused by wet weather on our highways.
A reminder to drivers to drive to the conditions and keep a good following distance to give yourself the best chance of avoiding hazards.
Check the Waka Kotahi Journey Planner(external link) website before heading off for information on which routes may be affected by recent bad weather.
We will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
