State Highway 2 Waimana Gorge is closed this morning between Station Road, Tanetua and Woodlands Road in Ōpōtiki due to multiple slips. Wainui Road in Ōpōtiki is also closed, which would be the usual detour.
Contractors are working to open Waimana Gorge by midday.
State Highway 35 remains CLOSED between Maraenui and Omaio. Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency contractors returned at first light today to continue work to clear slips. The priority this morning is to push slip material to one side to free up one useable lane for traffic. This is likely to take several hours.
Note: Drivers travelling from Gisborne can still use State Highway 2 Waioeka Gorge – but will only be able to travel as far as Ōpōtiki. We suggest delaying travel if possible.
Please take extra care when driving, watch for hazards, adjust your speed and check the Waka Kotahi Journey Planner website before heading off for information on which routes are affected by recent bad weather.

Waka Kotahi thanks everyone for their patience and understanding while we work to clear the roads.
