Work to make State Highway 1 (SH1) Waikato Expressway safer at Tamahere is nearing completion, with two overnight closures planned to remove the temporary steel barriers.

To enable the temporary steel barriers to be removed, SH1 will be closed overnight between Ruakura interchange or Hillcrest intersection and the Cambridge interchange for two nights in a row.

The closure will only affect one direction of traffic at a time, southbound lane first, followed by the northbound. While SH1 is closed at Tamahere, all traffic will be detoured.

Southbound lane closure and detour – Tuesday 20 September

On Tuesday 20 September, between 8pm and 7am, southbound traffic will be detoured from the Ruakura intersection via SH26 and SH1B to the Cambridge interchange, and from Tamahere interchange via Tamahere Drive to Cambridge township.

Northbound lane closure and detour – Wednesday 21 September

On Wednesday 21 September, between 8pm and 7am, northbound traffic will be detoured from the Cambridge interchange via SH1B and SH26.

A contingency northbound or southbound lane closure and detour contingency on Wednesday 22 September, between 8pm and 7am, may be required to complete any temporary barrier removal. The public will be notified of the closure if it’s required.

Detour route for heavies

  • Overweight vehicles – can travel the detour if they hold a permit issued by Waikato District Council.
  • 50MAX – there are no 50MAX bridge restrictions – refer to map of 50MAX routes.
  • HPMV – can travel the detour if they hold a Waka Kotahi issued HPMV permit.

People are asked to take extra care when travelling along the detour route by following any temporary speed limits, signs and instructions from the traffic management team.

After the temporary steel barriers have been removed along the 1.5km section of SH1, the speed limit at Tamahere will revert to the permanent new speed limit of 110km/h.
