Pathways in and around Wai-O-Taiki Nature Reserve will be closed temporarily, while important track upgrades are undertaken.

This popular nature reserve features a mixture of exotic and native bush and is home to abundant birdlife (including spoonbills), as well as open spaces used for grazing horses. It is a jewel in the crown of many who live in the surrounding Glen Innes and Point England neighbourhoods.

To ensure safety standards are at an acceptable level, a full path upgrade is required for the well-used trail network within the reserve, including the Northern Loop Track. The path network within the reserve will be closed during the works.

“Work starts in October 2022, and we expect it to be completed within two months, however this is weather dependant,” explains Nina Quintana from Auckland Council Community Facilities.

“We appreciate that the spring/summer months are the most attractive time of the year for birdwatchers and walkers to this area, however, this work simply needs to be done during the dry season.”

“The team will do all that we can to complete the project as quickly as possible, with the aim that the community can get back to safely enjoying access to the Wai-O-Taiki Reserve walkways, as soon as possible.”

The upgrades include two new bridges, path upgrades, and a boardwalk adjacent to the. Please note that the old pathway along the water’s edge will remain closed and is not part of a planned upgrade due to the level of coastal erosion there.

While it is always disappointing to close a popular walking track during the busy season, water damage and the need to future-proof public use of the area has become a priority. Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Local Board, which is funding the project, thanks the local community for their support of the temporary closure, despite the inconvenience, while the important work is undertaken.

Please follow the guidance of onsite signage until the works have been completed.
