Waka Kotahi is reminding motorists that State Highway 2 (SH2) over the Remutaka Hill will be closed for five nights from Sunday night, 4 September, to Friday morning, 9 September.

The overnight closures, from 9 pm to 4 am, allow essential maintenance and slip prevention work to be carried out.

These closures significantly reduce the number of daytime disruptions for road users. Road crews can also complete a large amount of work safely over a small number of closures because multiple crews can work across the hill at the same time without disrupting traffic.

  • We cannot offer crossings of the Remutaka Hill during these maintenance closures unless a traveller has special circumstances and has booked. We will remain in contact with Emergency Services to ensure we can prepare for the safe passage of their vehicles. The amount of work taking place makes unplanned crossings unsafe to manage – for both the workers and road users. Any travellers with special circumstances should contact customer@wta.nzta.govt.nz  Otherwise, we regret that travellers turning up without a booking will be turned away.
  • More information about the closures can be found at www.nzta.govt.nz/remutaka(external link) or email remutaka@nzta.govt.nz

Waka Kotahi understands the closure may inconvenience some road users. We want to thank them for their patience and understanding as we carry out this essential work.

Regular users of this route are encouraged to stay up to date on upcoming closures. While these dates are fixed, bad weather may cause work to be cancelled. A full list of planned closures is in the table below:
