Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency has re-opened State Highway 6 Rocks Road to traffic in both directions.
The road was closed from midday until just after 2pm to allow contractors to put in place the traffic control measures needed to safely open the road to two-way traffic.
People should plan for trips to take longer than usual, with a temporary speed restriction of 30km/h in place while repair work continues.
Cyclists travelling from Nelson to Richmond will need to use the railway reserve, while those travelling from Richmond to Nelson can ride on the road.
The seaward side footpath can be used by pedestrians in both directions.
The road may be closed at short notice if geotechnical experts advise of the risk of slips or due to weather issues.
Waka Kotahi thanks everyone for their patience and consideration while this urgent work is completed.
