The next set of temporary changes around the Bayfair roundabout is coming up next week.

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is applying temporary changes to the road layout on State Highway 2/Maunganui Road, at the Bayfair roundabout, overnight on Monday 15 August.

The new temporary layout allows construction of the new Bayfair roundabout in parallel to works on the Bayfair flyover.

Starting overnight on Monday 15 August, the roundabout will be made bigger, traffic lanes moved and lane widths reduced to create a new work zone in the middle of the intersection.

The layout change is required to enable construction of the permanent road on the lanes closest to the roundabout and a new and larger roundabout, which will include traffic signals at completion.

The most significant change for road users will impact those approaching the Bayfair roundabout from Matapihi Road. Once the new layout is in place, people approaching the roundabout from Matapihi Road will change to left lane left-turn only and right lane straight through and right-turn only.

All other vehicle approaches to Bayfair roundabout will remain unchanged and people walking and cycling will retain access to the underpass, which they are strongly encouraged to use to cross SH2 in this location.

The Bayfair side of Girven Road, between the roundabout and Gloucester Road, will remain reduced to one lane while footpath is constructed and the entrance into Bayfair is finished. Access to Bayfair from Girven Road will be via the traffic signals at Gloucester Road.

People driving are asked to adhere to the posted speed limit through the Bay Link work site and share the road safely.

The change in road layout provides an opportunity to construct the roundabout in parallel with the flyover, rather than constructing each element consecutively, and reduces the overall construction period at the Bayfair end of the project. The new layout is expected to remain in place for around six months.

In the event of bad weather or other unforeseen circumstances, the implementation of the new layout may be moved to the next suitable nights. Signs will be in place to advise approaching drivers of the new layout.

People are asked to take extra care when they access the roundabout from Matapihi Road as they get used to the new lane layout, especially during morning and evening peak times.

Waka Kotahi thanks drivers, local residents and businesses for their patience as we continue to progress the Bay Link project.
