Drivers travelling on State Highway 2 over the Remutaka Hill need to be aware routine road closures are planned over the next 11 months.
Between August 2022 and July 2023, this section of the state highway will be closed at night over a number of weeks over the summer season. This is to allow essential maintenance and slip prevention work to be carried out.
Mark Owen, Regional Manager Wellington/Top of South, says the programme includes five block closures of five nights and five single Sunday night closures, between 9 pm and 4 am each night. Two five-night closures will run back to back in May to allow for major works.
“Overnight closures on this steep, narrow road make conditions safer for our maintenance crews and allow better quality work. Having the entire section of highway closed allows road crews to get more work done as multiple crews can work across the hill at the same time without disrupting road users. The approach significantly reduces stop/go disruptions for road users at other times”, Mr Owen says.
The first overnight closure is planned for the night of Sunday 14 August.
Mr Owen is thanking road users for their patience and understanding as contractors work to make the road safer.
