The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has approved, with conditions, OMV New Zealand Limited’s application to discharge substances off the Taranaki coast.
Oil and gas company OMV New Zealand applied for a non-notified marine discharge consent to discharge harmful substances in drilling fluids into the marine environment from Māui Platform Alpha, in the Taranaki Basin in New Zealand’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ).
The discharges are associated with drilling two new side-track wells in Petroleum Mining Permit area (PML381012). The side-track drilling activities are authorised under Marine Consent EEZ200010 that was granted in 2019.
On 29 July 2022, we granted consent, subject to conditions. OMV New Zealand must comply with the conditions in the decision report, including ensuring that the discharges do not exceed the maximum volume for each harmful substance.
This marine discharge consent (EEZ30015) will expire on 29 July 2027.
