A rockfall has closed State Highway 65 at Dellows Bluff, west of Murchison.

While vehicles initially trapped have been released, the Highway is now closed to all traffic while the slip is investigated, and contractors make sure the road is safe to be used.

Travellers are urged to delay their journey if possible. Otherwise, the only alternative route for people travelling from Christchurch to Nelson is via State Highway 1 – which will add an hour to travel times. There is no direct route to the West Coast from Nelson.

Waka Kotahi will provide a further update after midday.

Those intending to travel in the area can stay updated by checking our journey planner(external link) and our online channels.
