Yesterday’s truck crash and subsequent recovery attempt near Castle Hill on the Arthur’s Pass route between Canterbury and the West Coast could not be completed in the timeframe.

The truck recovery and full road closure will resume this afternoon (Thursday) at 12.30 pm and go through to around 4.30 pm, says Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency.

Leading into this full closure, from 10.30 am to 12.30 pm, the highway will be down to one lane with Stop/Go traffic management, so road users need to build in extra time this morning.

The closure point on the Canterbury side is half a km east of Castle Hill Village, between the village and Thomas River Bridge.

Electronic signs are advertising the closure.

Drivers can take the Lewis Pass route (SH7) via Waipara as an alternative slightly longer but fully open route.
