People walking and cycling over Waikanae River Bridge will soon be able to cross more safely.

Waka Kotahi contractors have begun initial work to enable a structure with a shared path and safety barriers on the side to be attached to the downstream side of the bridge for pedestrians and cyclists.

These enabling works, including the construction of foundations at both ends of the bridge, are being carried out this month. The new path (measuring 2.5m wide and approximately 80m long), safety barriers and retaining walls will be built in June and July this year.

“Waka Kotahi is committed to ensuring everyone can get where they’re going safely. This is an exciting project as it will mean people on foot and riding bikes are separated from vehicles using the main part of the bridge, providing them with a much safer passage,” says Glen Prince, Principal Project Manager, Waka Kotahi.

Drivers are advised that there is a lane closure over and leading up to the bridge to allow the works to be carried out, with stop/go traffic control in place.
