It has been a busy week for Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency contractors, with crews working hard to repair the damage caused by severe weather events over the past two weekends
Regional Manager Maintenance and Operations, Jaclyn Hankin, says the two recent extreme weather events experienced in coastal Taranaki have resulted in erosion of the stream banks immediately upstream of the Heimama Stream Bridge on State Highway 45, just north of Opunake.
“Contractors are currently working to prevent further erosion and this area of SH45 will remain under Stop/Go for the duration of the works.”
The slip at Uruti, State Highway 3 remains under Stop/Go traffic lights until a safety assessment can be completed.
“Despite the weather setbacks, works on SH3 at Coronation Avenue in New Plymouth, as well as at Mt Messenger, have now been completed,” says Ms Hankin.
Upcoming maintenance and repairs
Over the next two weeks, maintenance crews will be working hard to complete pre-reseal repairs on State Highways 3, 3A and 45. There will be multiple sites across the network under Stop/Go, with delays of no more than 5-10 minutes at each site.

Ongoing road sealing
Resealing will be undertaken on a large number of locations on Taranaki roads over the next two months.
Resealing improves the surface layer of the road for the safety of those who travel on it. It also helps to waterproof the road, increasing its longevity, especially during the wetter months in Taranaki.
Most of the sealing sites will be run under Stop/Go, with delays of approximately 5-10 minutes.
To minimise risk of damage to both vehicles and the new seal, it is crucial road users adhere to all temporary speed restrictions in place. This also helps keep our crews and road users safe.
