Unfavourable weather has led to a need to extend the timeframe for the resurfacing works on State Highway 2 Takitimu Drive under the Waihī Road overbridge.
With rain hampering progress earlier this week, contractors are aiming to complete the majority of the southbound lane surfacing over the next two nights, prior to Auckland Anniversary Weekend. Before midday Friday 28 January the road will be returned to two lanes in each direction, with a 50km/h temporary speed limit through the work area due to uneven surfaces.
After the long weekend contractors will return to close the northbound lanes, with one lane of traffic in each direction utilising the southbound lanes under a 30km/h temporary speed limit.
Resurfacing will take place over three nights next week on the northbound lanes as well as the Waihī Road on-ramp and roundabout. During this time, the majority of the median barriers separating the directions of traffic on SH2 will be reinstalled.
Work will continue over Waitangi Day Weekend, to complete the final surfacing layers, road mark all lanes, and reinstall the final median barriers. Two-way traffic flow will be maintained throughout, however the exact lanes utilised will depend on the work being undertaken. Please drive to the temporary speed limit and pay attention to any temporary signage and instructions from crew on site.
The road is expected to be fully re-opened the night of Sunday 6 February.
