With ongoing disruption in 2021 Toyota wants to thank its customers for their ongoing loyalty to the brand.

Toyota New Zealand Chief Executive Officer, Neeraj Lala says he wants to thank all the customers for their ongoing patience as COVID supply disruptions have affected Toyota’s supply chain throughout 2021.

“We are enormously grateful for our customers this year,” Neeraj says. “All of our results are on the back of their loyalty, and from the bottom of my heart I want to say thank you.”

In 2021 Toyota New Zealand was focused on electrifying its range to provide customers with the largest choice, and in the bid to reduce carbon emissions as a company.

Toyota’s CO2 emissions dropped a further 3% to 158g/km, and over the past five years Toyota has achieved a 14% emissions reduction in its fleet.

With a record number of hybrid electric vehicles sold in 2021, Toyota is looking forward to 2022 and a carbon neutral future.

“We are seeing customers choose hybrid options 38% of the time which is really encouraging to see,” says Neeraj.

“As we wrap up our 34th year as market leader we are in a great position to continue our leadership in low emission technology, and we will continue to explore new low emissions technologies and mobility solutions as we move to carbon neutrality.”

“There is a need to look at the just transition when it comes to transport emissions reductions. Kiwi customers still want choice, and we offer a wide range of vehicles. The top three best sellers for 2021 were Hilux, RAV4, and Corolla which illustrate the variety of vehicles Kiwis are buying,” he says.

Toyota New Zealand also saw a large increase in the sale of hybrid-electric used vehicles, accounting for 25% of the overall 2021 sales. The most popular electrified vehicle for used vehicles was the hybrid electric Aqua, showing that the transition to lower emission technology is not only in the new vehicle sector.

As part of Toyota’s agency model, customers also have a capped price servicing rate under the Toyota Care Service Advantage, which ensures transparency of pricing when servicing your new Toyota at the recommended servicing schedule.

“Toyota Care Service Advantage provides customers the protection against rising servicing prices, while customers also enjoy the value and certainty of capped price servicing,” says Neeraj.

“We are able to ship 95% of the parts required for your servicing directly from our Palmerston North based parts warehouse.”

“We made the decision to carry extra parts stock in our warehouse to provide servicing continuity across over 70 sites around the country through Toyota Stores, trade garages, and collision repair shops meaning we are able to help more kiwis get their vehicles back on the road.”

As the year drew to a close, Toyota New Zealand is also celebrating the GR Yaris winning the AA Driven Car of the Year and the Yaris Cross, RAV4, RAV4 Hybrid and Hilux also winning their respective categories.

In the commercial space Camry Hybrid was also voted overall Car of the Year by NZ Company Vehicle and St Johns Ambulances have ordered over 210 Toyotas for 2022.

“I’ve been with Toyota New Zealand for more than two decades and I’ve never seen such a great line up of recognition for our vehicles. We are truly appreciative of this recognition of our product through both the awards, and customer feedback,” Neeraj says.

“I am excited as we head into 2022 with new low emission product arriving, including our first battery electric vehicle the bZ4X,” he says.

Toyota also ended 2021 as the top automotive brand in the US, with a boost in sales by 10% on the previous year. Toyota Motor Corporation ended 2021 with 2.3 million vehicles sold in the US market.
