While the Auckland region is in Alert Level 3, Auckland Council will continue to provide essential services to Aucklanders, including support for workers and members of the community.
Along with Auckland Transport continuing to provide public transport services for essential travel, 97 public toilets will remain open in our parks and open spaces. These facilities will undergo regular cleaning while Alert Level 3 is in place.
Selection of public toilets under Alert Level 3
Generally, public toilets are required to be closed under the government’s Alert Level 3 guidance.
The council has made provision to open a small number of toilets, around 100, to ensure they’re available for workers carrying out essential work in Alert Level 3 and in areas where there’s a particular need, like for rough sleeper communities.
Toilets have been identified based on proximity to transport and freight routes, for people using or delivering these services; around vulnerable communities and near essential businesses.
We also must balance our management of open toilets with the strict rules around physical distancing in small spaces, provision of essential services and the limited number of staff or contractors that we are allowed to have working at the moment. We are required to only operate a skeleton maintenance team and servicing open public toilets requires higher frequency cleaning due to the virulence of the delta strain of COVID-19.
