The Human Rights Commission extends Aroha and sympathies to all those injured and terrorised by the attack in Auckland on Friday.

Race Relations Commissioner Meng Foon called for the victims of this attack to be in our thoughts and echo’s the calls not to generalise when it comes to blaming for this atrocious act.

“The Prime Minister has already stated that it was carried out by an individual. Not a faith, not a culture, not an ethnicity, but an individual person gripped by an ideology that is not supported here, by anyone or any community. We must remember this and not spread hate or racism in our reactions,” Race Relations Commissioner Meng Foon said.

Chief Human Rights Commissioner Paul Hunt said New Zealand is not defined by the terrible events of Friday but by our collective response to them.

“As we have done before, we must demonstrate support, solidarity and empathy to everyone hurt and shocked by an act of cowardly terrorism. New Zealand is on a journey to become a better place. Despite all the challenges, there is progress, and we will get there,” Hunt said.
