Auckland is the next stop for the Speaker’s Outreach programme, with a group of MPs set to engage with a cross-section of the city’s youth this Friday 11 June.
The group visiting this week comprises Speaker of the House, Rt Hon Trevor Mallard; Arena Williams MP (Labour); Melissa Lee MP (National); Helen White MP (Labour); and Hon James Shaw (Green).
The day for the delegation begins with a Q&A session with the Free Church of Tonga Youth Group, which involves a discussion about ways to empower youth to engage with Parliament.
Next, the delegation will visit the Manukau Institute of Technology for an informal BBQ session, where the Speaker and MPs will turn sausages and meet and talk with staff and students.
The day wraps up with a visit to Kingsford School in Mangere East. Students will take part in a role-play debating activity and a Q&A session with the group.
“Having taken a group of MPs to Christchurch just two weeks ago, I’m delighted to continue the outreach programme for 2021, this time with a visit to Auckland to meet youth from around the city,” said Mr Speaker.
“I, along with the MPs who take part in the programme, are always keen to engage with people from across Aotearoa to share ideas on how we can make Parliament more accessible to everyone.”
The visit is part of the Speaker’s Outreach programme, which aims to bring ‘Parliament to the people.’ This initiative was launched in South Auckland in 2018.
