Te Kāhui Tātari Ture | Criminal Cases Review Commission is making case review processes and application numbers more open by releasing monthly updates on their website.
Tumu Whakarae | Chief Executive, Parekawhia McLean says a key focus for the team is to make review processes accessible and welcoming.
“Our aim is to be as open, transparent and available to all applicants as we can be.
We can give broad updates on the number of cases and where they are at in the process. We also include a breakdown the people who are applying,” Ms McLean says.
Te Kāhui Tātari Ture is particularly looking to improve justice outcomes for Māori and Pasifika people.
“To do this we know people need to feel as if they are being treated independently, fairly and efficiently. We are unashamedly prioritising this work,” Ms McLean says.
Te Kāhui has recently reviewed and refined its case procedures to ensure the high volume of applications is processed as effectively as possible. The four core stages within a case review process are review of the application, initial assessment, section 25 investigation, and referral. Timeframes for each stage will differ depending on the case.
It is expected that the first referrals will be made to an appeal court within the first three years of operation of Te Kāhui Tātari Ture.
