Rāhui on Okakari Point Marine Reserve lifted

All activities in this area can recommence once the rāhui has ended today (Monday 24 May).

To mourn the dead minke whale washed ashore on Motururu/Goat Island, a rāhui had been in place since Friday 14 May.

DOC were notified by iwi of the specimen and together laid the whale to rest. The burial was led by Terrence ‘Mook’ Hohneck, Rangatira and Chairman of the Ngāti Manuhiri Settlement Trust.

The Ngāti Manuhiri Settlement Trust expressed their sympathy for the loss of the taonga species last week, and their appreciation to the community for their respect towards this cultural practice.
