Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is starting work next week on repairing and upgrading the walking and cycling path on the northbound (uphill) side of State Highway 1 through the Ngauranga Gorge.
From Wednesday 21 April, crews will begin repairs and upgrade work to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists using the walking and cycling path. The work is expected to be completed by the end of June 2021.
Regional Transport Systems Manager Mark Owen says the work is part of a wider safety improvement plan, which also includes the southbound walking and cycling path.
“We will be making several improvements, including widening the path, relocating the bus shelter, installing new pedestrian and cyclist markings, and drainage and vegetation clearance.
“Pedestrians and cyclists will be able to continue using the path while the work is underway. We have arranged our work schedule so that there will only be a minor inconvenience. For safety, we still encourage people using the path to be alert when travelling through the worksite, and keep speeds down.”
There will be coned or fenced paths so people walking or cycling can bypass the sites safely. Cyclists may be asked to dismount and walk through these sites.
Motorists travelling northbound on State Highway 1 can expect a lane closure at night and are advised to drive carefully past the worksite, for the safety of pedestrians, cyclists and road workers.
“We thank everyone for their patience and understanding while these important safety improvements are underway,” Mr Owen says.
