Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency advises resurfacing and chip sealing works will take place in multiple locations around Rotorua and Ōpōtiki Districts during the next two weeks.
A 30km/h temporary speed limit will apply during the below asphalt resurfacing works, which will take place at night between 7pm and 6am:
State Highway 2 Woodlands Road intersection, Ōpōtiki
Sunday 14 March and Monday 15 March
Stop/Go traffic management will be in place, with intermittent short-term road closures. Delays of up to 20 minutes are expected. For this site, short-term closures are likely to be limited to the first half of each night.
State Highway 30 Lynmore, between Tennyson Drive and Basley Road
Tuesday 16 March
Stop/Go traffic management will be in place.
State Highway 5 Mangakakahi, between Shirley Street and Riri Street
Wednesday 17 March and Thursday 18 March
Lane closures will be in place for both the northbound and southbound lanes. One lane will remain open in each direction at all times.
The following chipseal sites will operate under Stop/Go traffic management with a 30km/h temporary speed limit in place during the work, between the hours of 7am-6pm.
- SH2 Waioeka Road, Waioeka Gorge (various sites)
- SH5 Ngongotahā
- State Highway 33 Okere Falls and Mourea
- State Highway 35 Omaio and Toatoa
- State Highway 36 Kaharoa
- SH30 near SH5/Bryce Road intersection
For a period of at least 24 hours after a site has been sealed, and before it is swept, it continues to operate under a reduced temporary speed limit while we allow vehicles to travel over the seal and help “bed in” the chip and to reduce the risk of chip damaging windscreens. Following this, the site is swept, excess chip is removed and the temporary speed limit remains in place until line marking has been reinstated (within 48 hours of the site being sealed, weather dependent).
It is important motorists adhere to the relevant temporary speed limits during these works to avoid damage to their vehicles and ensure their safety and that of other road users and road workers.
Other ongoing work
SH2 Otara, 8km south of Opotiki
Work continues to this section of SH2.The road is operating under Stop/Go traffic management with a 30km/h temporary speed limit in place. Works will be completed before the end of March, weather permitting.
SH30 Horohoro and Atiamuri
Various road reconstruction works between the SH1/SH30 intersection and Nicholson Road continue through March, with completion due before the end of March, weather permitting. Works taking place between 6am and 6pm. During the construction period, the road will be one lane with a 30km/h temporary speed limit in place and a Stop/Go operation.
Shoulder widening works also continue on SH30 between Bryce Road and the SH5/SH30 intersection. The road is operating under Stop/Go traffic management with a 30km/h temporary speed limit in place.
SH5 Road Tarukenga, between Dalbeth Road and Dansey Road
Road reconstruction work with completion expected at the end of March 2021. Stop/Go traffic control is in place with a 30km/hr temporary speed restriction.
These works are part of the Waka Kotahi spring/summer road maintenance programme, which will see repairs and resurfacing carried out on state highways across the Bay of Plenty.
