The iconic Auckland Dockline Tram will be back on track performing its well versed 1.5km loop of Wynyard Quarter from this Sunday 7 February, 2021.
The tram will operate on Sundays, public holidays and Saturdays over long weekends from 10am-4pm. It will be in action for the remainder of the 36th America’s Cup, and beyond.
The tram will take passengers along Jellicoe, Halsey, Gaunt and Daldy streets whilst providing live commentary on the sights, attractions and history of the area.
Due to the amount of construction and development within Wynyard Quarter ahead of the 36th America’s Cup, the tram route was suspended in August 2018. Since then, the area has transformed and there are so many new sights to see, experience and learn about.
The cost of travelling on the tram will be deliberately kept low, with all-day tickets priced at $2 for an adult and $1 for a child. Seniors with a SuperGold Card and under-five-year-olds will ride for free.
As the tram is considered a tourist attraction and not public transport, payment for the tram must be made by card or cash and AT HOP cards will not be accepted. This also means that face masks will not be mandatory under New Zealand law, however passengers are encouraged to scan on using the NZ COVID Tracer app and are welcome to wear a face mask if they choose.
The announcement of the tram’s return comes thanks to a new partnership between the Museum of Transport and Technology (MOTAT) and Panuku Development Auckland, Auckland Council’s urban regeneration agency.
The agreement, for an initial period of up to three years, including regular reviews, will see MOTAT operate the tram to ensure it runs smoothly.

“MOTAT has considerable tramway experience as well as a talented team of drivers, who are excited to share and educate the public on the heritage and operation of these beautiful machines.
“From a child’s first tram ride, to the nostalgia experienced by older generations, a tram ride is a fantastic way to experience the joys of Auckland’s spectacular waterfront and the exciting events and activities happening over summer.”
Durning the America’s Cup racing and celebrations, MOTAT is encouraging those who ride the Auckland Dockline Tram to visit MOTAT to see their fleet of trams, heritage transport and other examples of Kiwi innovation. Tram riders can do this by keeping their tickets to redeem at MOTAT against the standard general admission price.
