Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is reminding motorists travelling on State Highway 2 between Athenree Gorge and Te Puna to plan ahead as there will be delays from Monday (14 December 2020) while road resurfacing works at various locations are underway.

Our contractors are working hard to get these works completed ahead of the busy holiday season and we encourage all motorists to be considerate of other road users by adhering to the relevant temporary speed limits to avoid damage to vehicles and ensure their safety, that of other road users and our road workers.

There is also road reconstruction work underway on a section of SH2 near Woodland Road, north of Katikati during the day (between 7am and 6pm), and motorists considering travelling via State Highway 29 over the Kaimai Range should be aware of significant road reconstruction work on a section of the east-bound Crawler Lane between the SH29 and State Highway 28 intersection and the Swap Kaimai Farm entrance, on the western (Waikato) side of the Range.

To reduce the impact on motorists, some of the resurfacing works between Athenree Gorge and Te Puna will be completed at night between 7pm and 5am. While the works are underway, the sites will operate under Stop/Go traffic management, with a 30km/h temporary speed limit in place. During the day, a temporary speed limit of 50km/h will be in place.

For a period of at least 24 hours after a site has been sealed, and before it is swept, it continues to operate under a reduced temporary speed limit while we allow vehicles to travel over the seal and help to bed in the chip. This also lowers the risk of flying chip causing broken windscreens for all users.

Following this, the site is swept, excess chip is removed and the temporary speed limit remains in place until line marking has been reinstated (within 48 hours of the site being sealed, weather dependent).

These works are part of the Waka Kotahi spring/summer road maintenance programme, which will see repairs and reseals on state highways across the Bay of Plenty to ensure the safety and resilience of the state highway network.

Warmer spring and summer months are the best time for resurfacing as daylight hours are longer and the warm temperatures and dry air help the new seal stick to the road surface.

Motorists should expect delays and are advised to allow extra time for their journeys and avoid travelling during peak hours, where possible.

In the event of bad weather or other unforeseen circumstances, work will be postponed. Visit the interactive Waka Kotahi Journey Planner website for the latest information on roadworks, traffic, road closures and detours to help plan your trip.
