Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency advises road maintenance works will take place at various locations over the next three weeks on State Highway 2, from Monday 30 November.
To reduce the impact on motorists, resurfacing works between Katikati and Te Puna will be completed at night between 7pm and 5am. While the works are underway the sites will operate under Stop / Go and a 30km/h temporary speed limit. During the day, a temporary speed limit of 50km/h will be in place.
Road reconstruction on a section of SH2 near Woodland Road, north of Katikati, will operate during the day (between 7am and 6pm) and is expected to be completed mid-December.
These works are part of the Waka Kotahi spring/summer road maintenance programme, which will see repairs and reseals on state highways across the Bay of Plenty to ensure the safety and resilience of the state highway network.
Warmer spring and summer months are the best time for resurfacing as daylight hours are longer and the warm temperatures and dry air help the new seal stick to the road surface.
For a period of at least 24 hours after a site has been sealed, and before it is swept, it continues to operate under a 30km/h temporary speed limit while we allow vehicles to travel over the seal and help to bed in the chip. Following this, the site is swept, all excess chip is removed and the temporary speed limit is increased to 50km/h until line marking has been reinstated (within 48 hours of the site being sealed).
Motorists should expect delays after the reseals have been completed and are advised to allow extra time for their journeys and avoid travelling during peak hours, where possible.
Our contractors are working hard to get these works completed ahead of the busy holiday season and we encourage all motorists to be considerate of other road users by adhering to the relevant temporary speed limits to avoid damage to vehicles and ensure their safety, that of other road users and our road workers.
