Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency advises the Central Waikato state highway summer maintenance programme will start next week.

Warmer spring and summer months are the best time for resurfacing as daylight hours are longer and the warm temperatures and dry air help the new seal stick to the road surface.

Work will begin with resurfacing on State Highway 1 north of Tirau on Tuesday (20 October) and our road maintenance crews will work their way southward toward the Central North Island over the coming months.

On Tuesday, southbound traffic travelling toward Tirau from Hamilton will be detoured via State Highway 29 and State Highway 27. Northbound traffic will remain on SH1, past the resurfacing sites.

These works are weather dependent and will be moved to the next fine day in the case of unsuitable weather.

Stop/Go traffic management with a temporary speed limit of 30km/h will be in place at most worksites. For some locations detours will be utilised to ensure reliable travel times for road users.

Once the new chipseal has been laid, a temporary speed limit of 50km/h will apply until the new surface has settled and the lines have been repainted.

The full programme of resealing is scheduled to be completed in February, with approximately 70km of resealing being completed across over 75 sites.

Motorists are reminded to reduce speed, and follow directions of traffic management staff and signage to help keep themselves, other road users and road workers safe.

Waka Kotahi thanks motorists for their patience.

Plan ahead for a safe, enjoyable journey. Keep up to date with:
