The 2020 New Zealand Rainbow Excellence Awards, held on 9 October, celebrated organisations around the country who are leading the way in creating safe and inclusive workplaces for our Rainbow communities.
The annual Awards brings together organisations striving to improve diversity and inclusion for all LGBTTQI+ people and celebrates the progress and achievements being made across New Zealand.
Auckland Council is proud to have won three of this year’s awards:
- Rainbow Tick Non-Commercial Sector Award, for a demonstration of leadership and innovation in rainbow diversity and inclusion
- SkyCity Community and Advocacy Award, in recognition of our outward public commitment to community groups
- Grant Thornton Innovation Award, in recognition of our willingness to try and adapt something new and bold to the unique needs of the council.
The awards are recognition of Auckland Council’s strong commitment to diversity and inclusion and the recent work of our Arts, Community and Events team.
As part of the Auckland Pride Festival last year, community centres across all of Tāmaki Makaurau were transformed into Proud Centres – places of celebration for our Auckland rainbow communities.
More than 150 activities enabled community members to put on events ranging from arts, sports, and community activism which provided safe places to bring people together.
“We are thrilled with and proud of the awards,” says Arts, Community and Events General Manager Graham Bodman.
“They not only recognise our leadership in diversity and inclusion, but also our creative approaches in bringing our diverse communities together.”
