A new initiative to help emerging and established artists trial their products and connect with peers kicks off this week.
Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology is supporting the Test Tube creative disruptive innovation project, which will be launched at The Incubator Creative Hub, in Tauranga, on Friday.
The project is being led by Bobbi Summers, who completed the Toi Ohomai Bachelor of Creative Industries last year. She was inspired to create this week’s event during a 10-week research scholarship she received from Toi Ohomai.
“I really like helping people and I’ve always been a big fan of markets, but I also had a lot of ideas on how they could be improved, especially in Tauranga. This scholarship was the perfect opportunity to put those ideas to the test, to actually connect with the community and see if they felt the same way. It turns out most people did and that’s how The Test Tube was born.”
The event, which will be held at The Historic Village from 6pm to 9pm, aims to support artists to trial their projects and ideas while also connecting with peers, supporters, mentors and potential investors.
“There’s never been a more relevant time for this, with all of the changes that Covid-19 has brought about – finding new and more effective ways to do the ‘same old thing’ is vital,” Bobbi says.
Bobbi intends to continue with similar events at the Village every second month.
This week’s Test Tube will include pottery, metal and leather work, theatre, painting, indigenous design and creative education as well as comedy, music, poetry and art dance performances.
