Auckland Council is on the lookout for 14 student rangers to join the regional parks team for a three-month paid internship this summer.

Applications are now open for students who have recently graduated or are currently studying conservation, environmental management, landscaping, recreation, tourism, or other relevant areas who want to gain valuable on-the-job experience in Auckland’s most beautiful office.

“This is the perfect summer job for students who see our parks as our greatest taonga and love to help people connect with nature,” says Auckland Councillor Alf Filipaina, Chair of the Parks, Arts, Community and Events Committee.

“Summer is the busiest time of the year for our regional parks with an influx of visitors and holidaymakers, so student park rangers play a key role in supporting our team and helping people make the most of Auckland’s beautiful regional parkland.”

But the role isn’t just about being a good kaitiaki (guardian). Applicants also need to have good people skills as interacting with park visitors on a daily basis is a key part of their role.

No two days are the same with student rangers assisting with customer service, bylaw enforcement, weed and pest control, kauri dieback management, nursery work, farming, track maintenance and machinery handling.

“This helps the student rangers gain invaluable knowledge across a wide variety of tasks. The skills the student rangers pick up through the internship programme will last them a lifetime,” says Auckland Council’s Regional Parks Manager Rachel Kelleher.

Rachel says it is the perfect way to kick off your ranger career.

“We have had many student rangers complete their internship who return as fulltime rangers at the end of the placement”.
