Work to help develop Papakura’s town centre into one of Auckland’s 10 proposed metropolitan centres has been allocated $100,000 in funding.
The money comes from Papakura Local Board’s 2020-21 locally-driven initiatives economic development work programme.
It will allow the Papakura Commercial Project Group, established in 2016, to continue to identify and deliver opportunities for the town.
Board chair Brent Catchpole says the group is made up of board, Papakura Business Association, Auckland Council and council-controlled organisation members.
“It has a great strength in that it has an independent chair and can draw on subject matter expertise as needed,” he says.
“The group has already identified several areas that will be looked at in greater detail as its work continues, particularly in the areas of community participation, connectivity and transport, town centre planning and sports, arts and culture.
“This funding will also allow for work to support linking Papakura to the start of the Hunua Trail, an exciting project that represents a great tourism opportunity we want to work on with our neighbours at Franklin Local Board.”
He says the allocation will also provide funding for the Innovating Streets Project to further develop a shared space in the town centre.
