As soon as the school holidays are over and children have returned to their classrooms, the Town Basin children’s playground will close for a makeover.
“The playground will be closed from 27 July until November when it will re-open brighter and better than ever,” said Infrastructure Planning and Capital Works Manager Shelley Wharton.
“We have chosen this time of year to do the work because it has a bit less use during the winter months, and reopening it for summer is something for all who love this playground to look forward to.”
“In the meantime, we have another 42 playgrounds across our District that people might like to explore. They are all listed with descriptions on our Playgrounds page:
Google also has a pretty good guide with photographs. It can be an adventure to see what the different playgrounds are like because they are usually designed to fit in with their unique communities and surroundings. For people wanting to stay closer to the centre of the city, playgrounds at Mander Park, Laurie Hall Park, Mair Park and Kensington Park – are all within a five-minute drive of the Town Basin.
Mrs Wharton said all the equipment in the Town Basin playground would be replaced.
To make it safer for children, a garden barrier will be built between the playground and the carpark and the closest section of the Hātea Loop will be realigned away from the edge of the Hātea River.
The popular climbing spiderweb frame will remain and will be joined by a two-storey slide tower, in-ground trampolines, a climbing circuit, as well as more swings than the current playground.
Sound play will be introduced with bongo drums, talking tubes and other music makers.
The theme of the redesign is time and tide which fits in with the clock museum, new Ball Clock and Hātea River.
