Staff from the Science Learning Hub (SLH), managed by the University of Waikato, are closely involved in developing content for the new Home Learning/Papa Kāinga TV channels launched this week.
As an existing and well-used online platform for teachers, students and communities to access science resources and improve science literacy, the content on the hub is proving a useful foundation for science episodes on Home Learning TV.
SLH staff are working collaboratively with other agencies, drawing from many existing resources, to develop scripts for learners in Years 4 to 10. A team of eight educators, resource developers and multimedia experts is feeding into the writing process, assisted by the University’s Institute of Professional Learning.
SLH Director Dr Cathy Buntting says the project has been very challenging, particularly given extremely short turnaround times and limitations for studio filming in lockdown conditions, but it’s exciting to be involved.
The key motivator for the SLH team has been addressing inequity. Home Learning TV is an opportunity to present content to children who may not have access to this material online and the SLH is contributing to making sure more children can access learning opportunities during this time. Dr Buntting says the University can take pride in the determined effort from the SLH team, with this workstream solidifying the value of the SLH as a valuable and valued science education resource.
