Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency advises that contractors are undertaking essential maintenance activities across Wellington and Wairarapa which will continue over the coming weeks.

Regional Transport Systems Manager Mark Owen says these essential works allow Waka Kotahi’s contractors to ensure the roads remain safe for all road users.

“Safely maintaining New Zealand’s state highway network is considered vital at this time in order to ensure that critical functions to limit the spread of COVID-19 can continue.”

The maintenance work includes finishing line markings, making minor repairs such as pot holes and damaged guard rails, clearing drainage channels, sweeping the road and inspecting roads to identify areas that may need repairs.

This work is being undertaken at locations on State Highways 1, 2, 58 and 53 across the Wellington and Wairarapa regions and will continue over the next few weeks.

This week, weather permitting, contractors will be working to replace the damaged guard rail and bridge surface caused by a recent truck crash which has closed the Aotea Quay off ramp.

Mr Owen asks people to be patient and considerate to roadworkers and look out for their safety and wellbeing.

“If you see contractors on the roads during the shutdown period please remember that they are carrying out vital work to keep us all safe.

“If you are using the roads during this period please remember to obey any temporary speed restrictions through roadworks to keep our workers safe.

“People should only head out for essential supplies or services, otherwise, please continue to stay safe and stay home.

“If you must drive to access essential supplies or services please take care, drive to the conditions and adhere to the speed limits.”

Please note that while Waka Kotahi is working hard to provide up-to-date information, given the current operating environment under the COVID-19 Alert Level 4 some road works may change at short notice, and people are encouraged to visit the Waka Kotahi’s Journey Planner website (journeys.nzta.govt.nz(external link)) for real time information about their journeys.
