Auckland Museum has a host of great events planned for the next few months.

It’s the final month to visit our Voyage to Aotearoa: Tupaia and the Endeavour exhibition and our free Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition begins next week!

Auckland Museum heads to Pasifika Festival and Polyfest with our “pop-up” museum Ata Hira Museum on the Move drawn from our exhibition Voyage to Aotearoa: Tupaia and the Endeavour and on Sunday 15 March at 1.30pm in conjunction with the Play It Strange Trust we will marking one year since the horrific attacks on two Christchurch mosques, with a minute’s silence followed by original songs performed by finalists in Play It Strange’s most recent Peace Song competition at Christchurch Memorial Peace Concert.

Lest We Forget Poetry Competition – Children of War

For this Anzac Day writers are invited to respond to the theme of “Children of War”, in poetry or prose. The competition is open to all ages.

There are three age categories: 18 years +, 12 – 17 years and 11 years and under. Prizes are $150 prezzy cards for each of the nine finalists.

Finalists, chosen from each age category will be invited to read their entries inside the Museum on Anzac Day at 9.30am.

Christchurch Memorial Peace Concert

Join us on Sunday 15 March at 1.30pm for a special concert, presented in conjunction with the Play It Strange Trust. Voyage to Aotearoa: Tupaia and the Endeavour CLOSES SUN 15 MAR

ON NOW – 15 MAR 2020, AUAHA ATEA NUI SPECIAL EXHIBITIONS HALL, FREE WITH MUSEUM ENTRY

Set sail on an epic Pacific adventure with Tupaia, the Tahitian high priest, navigator and artist. Pilot your va‘a around the Society Islands, then journey with Tupaia aboard Captain Cook’s HMB Endeavour from Tahiti to Aotearoa in 1769. Experience life as a sailor charting the coastline of Aotearoa and learn about the significant role Tupaia played as a translator and mediator, for Europeans and tangata whenua.

After your adventure, pick up a copy of The Adventures of Tupaia an illustrated children’s book, available from the Museum Store.

 

Photographing Early Auckland 1850s – 1870s

ON NOW, SAINSBURY HORROCKS GALLERY, FREE WITH MUSEUM ENTRY 

The earliest photo of Auckland on record was taken around 1857 – marking the beginning of landscape photography in the city.

This small exhibition records changes over time to the shoreline of the Waitematā, and immediate surrounds through historical Auckland photography.

Explore the Auckland CBD; and identify current locations that are barely recognisable today.

A must-see, world-class exhibition enjoyed all over the world by nature lovers and photographers, the exhibition illustrates the majesty and vulnerability of life on our planet – from big fin squid to a marmot being ambushed by a Tibetan fox, from army ants to American bison. Whilst inspiring curiosity and wonder, the images also remind us of the fragility of our planet and our responsibility to protect it. This free exhibition is a chance to view these stunning photographs, beautifully illuminated, up close and in person.

 

Ancient Greeks: Athletes, Warriors and Heroes

Drawn from the British Museum’s renowned collection of the Ancient Greek world, this exhibition will feature more than 170 objects, the largest selection of ancient artefacts ever loaned to New Zealand by the British Museum.

Key objects in the show include iconic red and black-figure ceramics featuring depictions of athletes,

gods and citizens; stunning marble and terracotta statues and reliefs – including many nudes; bronze

figurines; weapons and armour; toys and games; fine gold jewellery; and coins.

Discover the little-known story of Tupaia and his role in the Endeavour’s voyage across the Pacific.
This pop-up family exhibition looks at the multiple perspectives of Tupaia’s life in Tahiti, on board the Endeavour and his arrival to Aotearoa.
Drawn from our exhibition Voyage to Aotearoa: Tupaia and the Endeavour, which explores the larger story of Tupaia, Ata Hira Museum on the Move uses key elements of his story to open conversations and create space for discussions and learning.
Plus there will be digital interactives, opportunities for exploration and activities for the whole family.
