Two people have been arrested following an aggravated burglary in Morningside overnight.

At about 3.10am, Police were called to a store on Levonia Street following a report of a group of people armed with tools were seen allegedly attempting to break in.

“A store worker has interrupted the offenders before they could gain entry; however they have then jumped in a vehicle and attempted to use that to break in,” Detective Senior Sergeant Rebecca Kirk, Auckland City CIB says.

“During this attempt, the worker has again intervened and was struck by the front of the vehicle.”

“Thankfully they sustained fairly minor injuries, but were obviously shaken up.”

Detective Senior Sergeant Kirk says the alleged offenders subsequently fled the scene in the vehicle prior to Police arrival but it wasn’t long before camera operators located it travelling on Great North Road towards St Luke’s.

She says the Police Dog Unit followed the vehicle on Archlynn Road where it was signalled to stop.

“The vehicle has failed to stop and a pursuit was authorised.

“A short time later the vehicle turned into Barry Road where it lost control and collided with a property.

“The occupants attempted to flee on foot but were quickly apprehended by nearby officers,” she says.

“This was an incredibly frightening experience for the victim, and we are continuing to make enquiries as we believe others were involved.”

Anyone with information is urged to contact Police on 105 and quote file number 261106/5610.

A 17-year-old will appear in Auckland Youth Court today charged with aggravated burglary and two counts of unlawfully getting into a motor vehicle.

A 13-year-old will be referred to Youth Aid Services.

Police are speaking with three others aged 11-14 and enquiries are continuing.
