Police are disappointed in the behaviours exhibited by a minority of Auckland fans during this weekend’s Rugby League World Cup matches.
Tens of thousands of supporters turned out across South Auckland to cheer on their teams, with the majority celebrating peacefully and lawfully.
However, Counties Manukau District Commander, Superintendent Shanan Gray, says there were exceptions that required Police attention.
“It was concerning for Police to witness individuals putting themselves and others in harm’s way with high-risk behaviours, including running into roads, poor driving choices and public intoxication.
“In some areas, excessive noise from loudspeakers and car horns continued into the early hours of the morning.
“This is unacceptable, and it has a significant impact on the wellbeing of local residents and businesses.”
Nine arrests were made for disorder-related offending.
A total of 160 staff were deployed solely to policing tournament-related gatherings last night.
This places a significant demand on Police resources, and Superintendent Gray is appealing to fans to think about how their actions impact the whole community.
“The message from Police is clear: celebrations don’t override expectations.
“Gatherings and those attending them must be safe, lawful and respectful,” he says.
Police will remain visible across town centres to monitor celebrations and ensure the safety of supporters and the wider public.
ENDS.
