Headline: Statement on ZenTech cyber security incident
MEDIA RELEASE
27 October 2026
The Ministry of Justice can confirm that the recent cyber security incident involving Zenith Technology Limited (ZenTech) involves some Coroners Court information.
The incident did not target Ministry of Justice or court systems.
We are working closely with Health New Zealand, police and other agencies. This will include determining how this information came to be with ZenTech, and exactly what information is involved.
What we know at this time is that the information affected includes some Coroners Court information relating to cases in the Otago/Southland region, largely between 2016 and 2022.
The Ministry is working with police to assess and analyse the information that was the subject of the cyber security incident. Further validation is required to establish which cases are affected.
We acknowledge that this development will be concerning for families who may be worried that information about them or their loved one is involved.
The Ministry has established a dedicated phone line (0800 638 924) for families to call if they are concerned their relative’s case is impacted by the breach. The phone line is available on weekdays from 8am to 5pm.
The High Court recently granted an interim injunction to prohibit persons from accessing, using or publishing confidential information held on ZenTech servers that was unlawfully taken in the cyber security incident.
A small number of current cases have experienced delays while the incident is investigated.
Due to an ongoing police investigation, and the sensitivity of the information involved, we are unable to comment further at this time.
