Attributable to Detective Inspector Nick Pritchard:
Today, Baby Ru and his whānau should be excitedly preparing for his upcoming fifth birthday and first day at school – instead, whānau are marking the third anniversary of his death.
Baby Ru arrived at Hutt Hospital with critical injuries and tragically passed away shortly after.
Our thoughts are with his whānau at this difficult time, what should be a time of celebration is now one of sadness.
The investigation team remain as committed as we were on day one that justice is served for Baby Ru.
We are highly motivated to hold the person responsible to account, and we continue to engage with the Crown Solicitor and forensic experts to assess evidential material gathered in order to determine the criminal liability of persons of interest.
Three adults, known to Ru, remain persons of interest in our investigation into his death.
We know there are people who know what happened to Baby Ru, and we believe this information is weighing on their conscience.
We urge you – lighten your load, do the right thing, and tell us what you know.
Police would like to thank everyone who has contacted Police with information, and urge anyone with any information, no matter how small, to speak with us.
We will continue to investigate every possible lead and piece of information we receive, no matter how small.
If you can assist with our enquiries, please contact Police online at 105.police.govt.nz or call 105, quoting file number 231022/1708. Information can also be provided anonymously through Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111.
