A gang member caught stealing alcohol now faces the sober reality of shoplifting charges worth more than $10,000.
On Friday afternoon Police received a report of a man entering a liquor store in Henderson Valley Road, Henderson and allegedly taking three bottles of alcohol before leaving the store without paying.
About 15 minutes after receiving the report, Police sighted a vehicle matching the description provided and signalled for the vehicle to stop.
“Officers located a man matching the offender’s description and wearing the same clothes,” Waitematā West Area Response Manager, Senior Sergeant Jon Winthrop says.
“The man has initially provided false details before a search of the vehicle located three bottles of alcohol.
“Officers also conducted checks on the vehicle’s registration number and found that it did not match the vehicle’s make and model.”
Senior Sergeant Winthrop says a subsequent check of Police records revealed the vehicle had been reported stolen.
“The man was also found to be in breach of bail and was sought for 13 separate shoplifting incidents.
“This was a great catch by Police.
“We have zero tolerance for anyone who targets businesses in our community, these people work hard to provide a service for their local community, and we will continue to crack down on this type of crime.”
A 33-year-old man has been charged with 13 counts of shoplifting along with a number of other charges.
He has been remanded in custody to appear in Waitākere District Court today.
