A dangerous driver will face court after he allegedly attempted to ram a patrol car while trying to evade Police in Mount Albert.
A Subaru first came to Police’s attention around 8.15pm on Sunday, after it was allegedly observed speeding along Mount Albert Road.
As Police approached, the driver attempted to avoid detection by switching the vehicle’s lights off and travelling down a side street.
Inspector Jacqui Whittaker, Auckland City West Area Commander, says a unit followed behind and signalled for him to stop.
“The driver ignored instruction, conducted a U-turn, and allegedly attempted to ram the patrol car.
“This manoeuvre was allegedly performed multiple times before the driver fled down a residential street.”
Thankfully, the Police vehicle was not struck and the officer involved was not injured.
Units soon sighted the Subaru nearby; however, the driver took off at speed on the wrong side of the road.
Eagle was dispatched overhead and followed the vehicle to Belcher Street, Sandringham where ground units were able to apprehend the driver, who had multiple warrants for his arrest.
“This offender’s reckless actions put Police and members of the public at serious risk.
“The driving exhibited would have been concerning for other motorists who witnessed it, and we want to reassure them that this behaviour will not be tolerated,” Inspector Whittaker says.
A 39-year-old man has been charged with operating a motor vehicle recklessly; failing to stop – aggravated; two counts of assaulting a first responder; and two counts of resisting Police.
He will appear in Auckland District Court today.
