An updated petroleum exploration data package will help attract investment and support exploration activity across New Zealand’s petroleum basins, Resources Minister Shane Jones says.
Mr Jones has welcomed the release of the 2025 Petroleum Exploration Data Pack by New Zealand Petroleum & Minerals (NZP&M), the first comprehensive update to the pack since 2018.
“Access to high-quality geoscience data is one of the most important factors explorers consider when deciding where to invest,” Mr Jones says.
“New Zealand has a long history of petroleum exploration and, over many decades, has built a substantial body of geological and exploration data. Making that information readily available is one of the most effective ways we can showcase our resource potential and encourage new investment.”
The 2025 Data Pack brings together New Zealand’s most comprehensive collection of open-file petroleum exploration information, including well, seismic, geological and geochemical data, prospectivity studies, interpretation projects, and technical reports.
Since the last Data Pack was released in 2018, an additional 74 wells and 31 3D seismic surveys have been added, including almost 16,000 sq km of new 3D seismic coverage.
The updated package includes:
All open-file well and seismic data released to the end of 2025
More than 42,000 km² of 3D seismic data and 310,000 line km of 2D seismic data
Quality-controlled composite well data for 728 wells
Production data for all producing fields, and
Basin prospectivity studies, geological reports, and interpretation projects covering New Zealand’s key petroleum provinces.
