Implementing the Approved Code of Practice for ports

These resources were made possible by the sector’s commitment to improving health and safety outcomes across the ports and supporting the initiatives of the Port Health and Safety Leadership Group (PHSLG).

The modules have been developed specifically for port workers and are designed to improve understanding of risk management and worker involvement in health and safety. 

The four modules are:

1.       Understanding hazards and risks

2.       Risk management in the workplace

3.       Risk management in workplace health and safety legislation

4.       Being involved in risk management

Each module takes approximately 30 minutes to complete and includes interactive activities, videos and optional audio narration to support different learning preferences. Extensive feedback from subject matter experts, industry representatives and workers was incorporated throughout development, including live user-testing with port and stevedore workers to make sure the modules were engaging, practical and easy to use.

Maritime NZ has also released Managing a Confined Space with a Hazardous Atmosphere, developed with support from the PHSLG and in collaboration with industry representatives, unions, port companies, stevedoring operators and technical specialists. The guidance is intended to help PCBUs identify, assess and manage hazardous-atmosphere risks associated with confined spaces. It also supports the practical application of existing regulatory duties and industry good practice.
