Transport Minister Chris Bishop has welcomed a major milestone for the new Hikuwai Bridge on State Highway 35 (SH35), north of Tolaga Bay, with the concrete bridge deck complete and the bridge expected to open later this year.
“Cyclone Gabrielle damaged the original bridge across the Hikuwai River, severing the state highway connection until a temporary Bailey bridge was installed in June 2023. Construction of the new bridge began late last year, and it’s great to see the strong progress the team have made on site,” Mr Bishop says.
“Construction has supported a range of local and regional businesses, with contractors including CLL Service and Solutions, Parata Construction, Kuru Contracting, Troy Wheeler Contracting, Currie Construction and Protrade working on the project, as well as local branches of Downer and Higgins.
“Completing the concrete pours that form the bridge deck is a significant milestone for the team. Steel beams were manufactured in Napier, pre-cast concrete panels were made in Tauranga, and around 140 cubic metres of cement from Gisborne was poured over three days to complete the bridge deck.
“This required close collaboration between the concrete plant, transport operators, pumping crews, and the construction team, all working together to ensure each concrete pour was completed safely and to the required quality standards.
“I want to thank local communities and freight operators for their patience while this work has been underway. I know many will be pleased to see the new bridge scheduled to open before Christmas.
“Over the next few months, crews will complete the southern Mechanically Stabilised Earth wall, providing a stable foundation for the bridge alignment, as well as installing barriers, asphalting, line marking and drainage work.
“SH35 is a critical lifeline for communities along the East Coast, so restoring a permanent, modern and resilient connection is hugely important. The new Hikuwai Bridge has been designed to better withstand flooding, erosion and earthquakes, helping make SH35 more resilient when severe weather hits.”

- Larger, deeper piles enhance resistance to flooding and erosion effects, while stronger columns boost structural durability.
- Improved bearings will also prevent the bridge deck uplifting when inundated and during earthquakes.
