Annual number of home consents up 21 percent – news story

There were 40,908 new homes consented in New Zealand in the year ended July 2026, up 21 percent compared with the year ended July 2025, according to figures released by Stats NZ today.
This was an increase of just over 7,000 homes from the 33,879 consented in the previous July year.
“Annual home consent numbers have continued to strengthen in recent months, with increases in both stand-alone houses and multi-unit homes,” economic indicators spokesperson Michelle Feyen said.
There were 18,884 stand-alone houses consented in the year ended July 2026, up 20 percent compared with the previous year.
There were 22,024 multi-unit homes consented, up 21 percent over the same period.
