A rider who failed to stop for Police and instead hit the gas will now face court.

At about 3.20am this morning, Police spotted the vehicle travelling along Puhinui Road, Manukau towards the Southern Motorway.

“Upon approaching the motorway on-ramp the motorbike has accelerated heavily and Police have activated their red and blue lights and siren,” Detective Senior Sergeant Veronica McPherson, Counties Manukau CIB, says.

“Officers have quickly pulled back and the Police Eagle helicopter has taken over to maintain observations on the rider.”

Detective Senior Sergeant McPherson says the motorcycle exited at Takanini and travelled through to Papakura.

“Eagle continued to follow the rider until he pulled into a garage at a nearby address where he was quickly taken into custody.

“This is a good example of great Police work from staff across Tāmaki Makaurau who brought this incident to a safe conclusion.”

A 22-year-old man has been charged with failing to stop and his bike has been impounded for six months.
