Two prolific youth offenders went from wheels to heels after an attempted car theft. But their fancy footwork, and quick change of clothes, were no match for eagled-eyed CCTV operators and the Police dog unit.
Rotorua Lakes Council CCTV operators first caught the duo on camera trying to break into a blue Mazda Demio in the Rotorua CBD area at approximately 4.40pm on 20 August and immediately alerted Police.
The pair high-tailed through the Rotorua streets, but the operators were able to track them, offering real time updates to Police. And the change of clothes wasn’t enough to throw the Police dog off the scent. The youths were located within 20 minutes.
The teenagers are due to reappear in Youth Court on 1 September and 8 September facing charges including unlawful interference of a motor vehicle.
Police thank Rotorua Lakes Council CCTV team for their swift actions.
The incident highlights the value of strong partnerships, effective communication, and real-time CCTV monitoring in holding repeat offenders accountable and enhancing community safety.
