Hamilton Police have arrested and charged a 26-year-old woman after an investigation targeting recent online marketplace scams.

Detective Sergeant Logan Oliver says Police launched an investigation after having received several reports of similar scam-related incidents.

“It is believed marketplace sellers have met with the woman, who has then allegedly provided fake bank transfers to purchase and receive the item.”

Following enquiries, Police identified and located a 26-year-old woman where she was taken into custody.

Police allege, over the past two months, the woman has received a number of high-value items including vehicles and electronic goods, with a total value of around $100,000.

The woman appeared in Hamilton District Court today, facing seven charges of using a forged document, one charge of theft, and one charge of take/obtain/use a document for pecuniary advantage. She has been remanded on bail and is due to reappear on 31 July.

Detective Sergeant Oliver says this arrest is a reminder for any sellers on marketplace to ensure they take the right steps to avoid scams and keep themselves safe.

“When you’re selling, never trust a screenshot anyone shows or sends you that says a payment has been made. Check your own bank account to make sure payment has gone through.

“Alternatively, it is best for all parties to agree to pay, or be paid, for items in cash and in-person. Ideally in a public place with CCTV coverage.”

If you believe you may have been victim of a scam or seem this situation may be familiar, please report the matter to Police.
