Long list of charges following late night fight

A couple spotted having an argument while stopped at a set of lights caught the attention of Police for all the wrong reasons late last night.

Just before 11.30pm, officers stopped at a set of traffic lights on Walters Road, Takanini and heard loud arguing between a man and woman in the vehicle next to them.

Relieving Counties Manukau South Area Response Manager, Acting Senior Sergenat Allan Nixon, says Police signalled for the driver of the Toyota Prius to stop.

“The vehicle has pulled over, however failed to remain and fled at speed on the wrong side of the road.”

Acting Senior Sergeant Nixon says no pursuit was initiated and further enquiries revealed the vehicle had been stolen.

He says the Police Eagle helicopter, along with multiple on ground units, flooded the area and located the vehicle a short time later on Waiari Road, Conifer Grove.

“Officers moved in and boxed the vehicle in, taking the driver into custody without incident.

“It’s extremely lucky the dangerous driving didn’t result in anyone suffering serious injuries.

“It’s also a great example of officers looking out for everyone in our community and responding to people in need.”

A 29-year-old man has been charged with failing to stop, unlawfully taking a motor vehicle, driving while suspended, possession of methamphetamine, possession of cannabis, dangerous driving, failing to remain stopped and possession of utensils for methamphetamine.

He will appear in Papakura District Court today.
