Newly qualified Masterlink apprentice Eric Gruythuysen, 25, has been named the overall winner of the 2026 Plumbing World Scholarship, recognising his dedication to the trade despite all obstacles.
Eric received the award at the 2026 New Zealand Plumbing Awards in Hamilton on 26 June, following an eventful year in which he completed four block courses, a further 11 apprenticeship assessments, and passed both his plumbing and drainlaying registration examinations.
“These accomplishments alone are a strong reflection of his dedication; however, what makes this even more impressive is that Eric achieved all of this while overcoming a significant setback,” says Callum Dimond, Masterlink Regional Manager.
Eric spent four months away from work recovering from ankle surgery. During this time, he continued his studies, increasing his apprenticeship completion from 66% to 97% within just 12 months.
On site, Eric has established himself as a reliable member of his host company, Kumeu Plumbing Limited, consistently producing quality work and developing strong customer service skills.
“His proactive approach and discipline highlight how seriously he values both his learning and his future in the industry,” says Callum.
Eric recently completed his apprenticeship through Masterlink, and is now a qualified plumber, gasfitter and drainlayer, marking the beginning of the next chapter in his career.
The $1,000 Plumbing World Scholarship is awarded annually to three Masterlink apprentices who show outstanding commitment, personal growth, and maturity.
